How to switch banks in Finland

Published 3 Sep 2026 · Updated 3 Sep 2026 · Reviewed by FinBanks Guide

Switching your everyday bank is easier than many people expect. Payments in Finland use the SEPA system, so account numbers (IBAN) and standing payments can be moved in an organised way.

1. Open the new account first

Set up the new account and its online/mobile banking before closing anything. Keep the old account open in parallel for a transition period so nothing is missed.

2. Move recurring payments

  • Salary and benefits: give your new IBAN to your employer and any authority that pays you.
  • Direct debits and e-invoices (e-lasku): re-create your e-invoice agreements and any recurring payments in the new bank. Providers often let you re-authorise online.
  • Cards: update your card details anywhere you have stored them for subscriptions.

3. Ask the new bank for switching help

Many banks offer a switching service that helps list and transfer your standing payments. Ask what support is available.

4. Close the old account when clear

Once salary, payments and e-invoices arrive in the new account for a full cycle, close the old one and confirm there are no fees or minimum-balance issues.

Remember that consumers legally resident in the EU generally have the right to a basic payment account. Compare providers first with our comparison table.
